The Heart of Peace Journalism

In The Heart of Peace Journalism, we speak with Dr. Giuliana Tiripelli (De Montfort University) about peace journalism as a bottom-up practice: how narratives shape perceptions of “the other,” how civilians’ voices can be amplified ethically, and where the boundaries lie when trauma, fear, or extremist views enter the frame. We also explore cross-border storytelling — its potential to soften tensions, and its limits in deeply divided environments.

The Peace Room

This podcast enters the spaces where official diplomacy rarely looks — the contact zones built by ordinary people. We explore the micro-diplomacy, quiet negotiations, and community stitching that keep fragile societies standing. Each episode uncovers how peace is sustained from below. These are stories of unarmed voices, shared courage, and the everyday work of resilience. This is the world of grassroots peacebuilding, one conversation at a time.

About the guest

Dr. Giuliana Tiripelli is a Senior Lecturer in Digital Journalism and Media Discourse at De Montfort University (UK). Her work explores how journalism and communication shape conflict, social change, and peacebuilding—especially through the language, frames, and narrative choices that define how “the other” is portrayed. She teaches and publishes on peace journalism, constructive and conflict-sensitive reporting, and the ethical challenges of representing civilian experience in polarised, trauma-affected contexts. Alongside academic work, she engages with policy and practice-oriented initiatives focused on media in crisis settings and community-centred communication.
