Two and a half hours on the platform, on average
Kids start with Tik-Tok at 13
On average, young people spend about two and a half hours on the platform, and account creation typically happens around the age of 13.
More than 4 in 10 young people (41.6%) do NOT verify the information provided on TikTok, and 1 in 10 has self-diagnosed a psychological issue after viewing content on the platform.
These are just some of the findings from the Generation TikTok survey, recently conducted by World Vision Romania and published on International Safer Internet Day.
Additionally, World Vision Romania marked Safer Internet Day with an awareness campaign for young people, conducted in partnership with TikTok.
The campaign is based on three pillars: empathy for other users, critical thinking about content, and maintaining a digital balance in platform usage.
Specifically, TikTok is sending out information today to all users about the tools that allow them to control their platform experience.
Furthermore, members of the World Vision Romania Children’s Advisory Council have launched a series of videos on the foundation’s TikTok account, aiming to provide clear and practical information on how to use TikTok content responsibly.
“The platform’s influence among teenagers is clear”
“This is the second year that TikTok has partnered with World Vision Romania for Safer Internet Day allowing us to reach as many users as possible with information about the safe use of social media platforms.
This year, the partnership coincided with the launch of the Generation TikTok study, which we had wanted to conduct since the election period.
The platform’s influence among teenagers is clear – 28% of them spend more than 3 hours a day on TikTok, essentially becoming ‘power users’.
Therefore, we aim to better understand consumption habits and the reasons behind them, so we can develop concrete solutions tailored to this generation’s needs,” said Mihaela Nabăr, Executive Director of World Vision Romania.
2.5 hours daily on TikTok and 5 hours on the internet
According to the study by World Vision Romania, 8 in 10 young people (84.2%) access TikTok daily. More than half (53.4%) access it more than four times a day. Females tend to use TikTok more frequently than males.
The time spent on the internet correlates directly with the frequency of TikTok use: on average, young people spend 2.5 hours daily on TikTok and over 5 hours on the internet in general. Those who access the platform more frequently and spend more time on it tend to find it more useful.
When asked why they created a TikTok account, most young people answered:
- For entertainment (74.2%)
- To pass the time (43.5%)
- To get information (43.1%)
- Because most of their friends and classmates use it (33%)
More than half of users (58.2%) believe TikTok has a positive impact on them.
One in four creates content on TikTok
Young people mainly follow:
- Friends and acquaintances (76.8%)
- Celebrities (68.6%)
- Experts in various fields (36.7%)
- Politicians (15.2%)
- Journalists (9.9%)
The study also found no significant differences between urban and rural users on TikTok, showing that the platform reduces disparities, as teenagers in both areas have similar online behaviors.
