Beijing is signalling a further deepening of economic ties with Germany, presenting trade and investment as stabilising factors in China’s relations with Europe. During a meeting with the CEO of the German Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Chinese officials underlined the importance of continued economic opening and support for German companies operating in China.
China’s Vice Minister of Commerce Ling Ji said that over five decades of diplomatic relations, economic cooperation has become an “anchor of stability” in both China–Germany and China–EU relations. Beijing pledged to further open its economy and improve the business environment for foreign companies operating in the country.
The Chinese side pointed to several priority areas for potential cooperation with Germany, including clean energy, artificial intelligence, biotechnology and trade in services. Officials also highlighted the role of German companies in initiatives promoting investment and exports to China, as well as their participation in major industry events such as the China International Import Expo.
German economy remains reliant on the Chinese market
Helena Melnikov, chief executive officer of the German Chamber of Commerce and Industry, said China remains one of Germany’s most important trading partners. She pledged that the chamber would continue its efforts to connect companies from both countries and support dialogue and cooperation, with a particular focus on the green transition and the healthcare sector.
“Our economies are closely intertwined, and we believe that the major trends of our time still offer many opportunities for cooperation in smart manufacturing, medical technology, and the circular economy. Through open dialogue we can jointly find solutions to the challenges of our volatile times. The German economy continues to rely on the Chinese market,” Melnikov said.
