One Year After the DANA: Inside Paiporta’s Unfinished Recovery
On the night of 29 October 2024, Paiporta, just outside Valencia, was hit by a sudden flood from the Poyo ravine. In less than an hour, the water rose by ten metres, destroying 2,200 ground-floor homes and sweeping away thousands of cars. According to the Ayuntamiento of Paiporta, 56 people died. A year later, most shops are open again, but many lives are still on hold, caught between repairs, paperwork, and the trauma left behind.
