The answer is no; one can never truly do enough because there is always more to be done. Our world is forever moving, and time endlessly ticks forward. We should not worry about doing enough, but rather that we are doing something at all.
The importance of action is not that you change the world, I don’t believe anyone can on their own. It’s about making small differences. If you make one person smile a day, you may very well have changed their world. If you lend a hand to one person when you could have walked away, you are the person who cares. These changes, these actions are what matter, and they all add up; if every person who cares takes one small action, they grow into something bigger than anyone and that is where real change begins.
The question of doing enough can be daunting, focusing on a specific issue rather than the entire world of problems can be easier and allows us to give more to that cause instead of fragments of our energy everywhere. The freedom to refocus on another issue is always there. The saying ‘take it one step at a time’ applies to most things in life, including changing the world. Pacing ourselves allows for better productivity and longevity.
There will always be bad days and difficult tasks, times when there is only enough care left for yourself; but as time drifts forward and the world keeps turning there is only one thing to remind yourself of – to answer that question I began with; if you take small actions, if you face the world’s problems and speak, if you push through the anxiety, if you look after yourself, if you care – You are doing enough.
