For the Youth Match Point project, I was given the opportunity to be one of the mentors on the platform and at Speed Dating events, which has been an incredible opportunity, a learning experience, and (as usual for me) very stressful.
Three years ago, it would have been out of the question for me to step this far out of my comfort zone when it comes to speaking with people outside my friend circle. Being a part of TFN has given me a huge push to work on that, and now, being a mentor in the project, feels like a big leap forward for me (yay!).
It’s a very different experience having to lead a discussion with people who look up to you as someone who can guide them. I was able to get the group to open up about their struggles and topics that are important to them, and I hopefully helped with some insight and advice. I’d say the mentees also gave each other new points of view and ideas. All in all, the discussions were very productive – not only a learning experience for them but for me as well.
I’m very happy to have been a part of the Speed Dating events and honestly kind of proud of myself for pushing through.
