This nocturnal, flightless bird has a population of only 236 adult individuals. The species depends on the mass fruiting of Rimu trees, a rare phenomenon that promises a record hatching rate this year.<\/span><\/p>\n<ol start=\"2\">\n<li><b> California condor: A fragile recovery under the threat of lead<\/b><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Although saved from extinction in the 1980s through captive breeding programs, the California Condor (<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Gymnogyps californianus<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">) remains in a critical situation. At the beginning of this year, the total population (wild and captive) <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.fws.gov\/sites\/default\/files\/documents\/2026-02\/2025-california-condor-population-status_508-compliant.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">was updated to 607 individuals<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. The main barrier to sustainability <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/California_condor\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">remains lead poisoning from hunting ammunition left in the carcasses these scavengers feed upon<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<ol start=\"3\">\n<li><b> Philippine eagle: The king of the jungle without a kingdom<\/b><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Considered the world\u2019s largest eagle by wing surface area, the Philippine Eagle (<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pithecophaga jefferyi<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">) faces massive habitat loss. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.boeing-sea.com\/news\/2025\/philippine-eagle-foundation-and-boeing-strengthen-conservation-partnership\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is estimated that fewer than 400 pairs remain in the wild<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Each pair requires <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Philippine_eagle\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">approximately 133 km\u00b2 of forest to raise a single chick<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and severe deforestation in the Philippines makes this nearly impossible.<\/span><\/p>\n<ol start=\"4\">\n<li><b> Amazon parrots: Victims of illegal trade<\/b><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Several species of Amazon parrots, such as the Imperial Amazon or the Yellow-naped Amazon, are now classified as critically endangered. Beyond forest destruction, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ifaw.org\/uk\/journal\/most-endangered-birds\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">they are hunted for the exotic pet trade, and some species have fewer than 50 individuals left in the wild.<\/span><\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/databank.worldbank.org\/metadataglossary\/world-development-indicators\/series\/EN.BIR.THRD.NO\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to the latest update of the IUCN Red List<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, over 12% of the world&#8217;s bird species are threatened with extinction.
