The process uses electricity from wind or solar sources to separate water into hydrogen and oxygen. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.iea.org\/reports\/the-future-of-hydrogen\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to the International Energy Agency<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (IEA), this process is essential for achieving emission neutrality by 2050.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Until recently, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.irena.org\/publications\/2020\/Dec\/Green-hydrogen-cost-reduction\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the high cost of electrolyzers was the main obstacle<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. However, technological progress and massive subsidies have led to a decrease in production costs by more than 40% over the last five years, making green hydrogen competitive with traditional fuels in certain regions.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><b> Impact on heavy industry: Green steel<\/b><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The steel industry is responsible for approximately 7-9% of global carbon dioxide emissions. The traditional method uses coal (coke) to extract iron from ore. Green hydrogen allows for the replacement of coal, resulting in water instead of <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">CO2).<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Companies like SSAB in Sweden have already demonstrated that <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ssab.com\/en\/fossil-free-steel\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;fossil-free&#8221; steel production is possible and viable on an industrial scale<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This transformation is not only ecological but also economic. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/energy.ec.europa.eu\/topics\/energy-systems-integration\/hydrogen\/european-hydrogen-bank_en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The European Union has launched the &#8220;European Hydrogen Bank&#8221;<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to finance projects that accelerate this transition in member states.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><b>III. Revolution in transportation: Beyond electric cars<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While small cars rely on lithium batteries, heavy-duty trucks, cargo ships, and airplanes need an energy density that batteries cannot yet provide.<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.airbus.com\/en\/innovation\/zero-emission\/hydrogen\/zeroe\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Liquid hydrogen or ammonia produced from green hydrogen are the solutions currently being tested<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> by companies like Airbus, which aims to launch the first zero-emission commercial aircraft by 2035.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.maersk.com\/news\/articles\/2023\/09\/14\/maersk-celebrates-the-naming-of-the-worlds-first-methanol-enabled-container-vessel\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In the maritime sector<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, container transport is responsible for a massive portion of global pollution. The giant Maersk has already invested in ships that run on green methanol derived from hydrogen, marking the beginning of the end for fuel oil in the oceans.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><b> The geopolitics of energy: New powers on the map<\/b><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The transition to hydrogen will rewrite the map of global influence. Countries with vast solar and wind resources, such as Chile, Australia, or Morocco,<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/energia.gob.cl\/h2\/eng\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> are preparing to become the major energy exporters of the future<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Chile, for example, has the potential to produce the cheapest green hydrogen on the planet due to the constant winds in Patagonia and the solar radiation in the Atacama Desert.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.industry.gov.au\/publications\/national-hydrogen-strategy\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Australia has launched giant projects, such as the &#8220;Western Green Energy Hub<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;, which will cover an area larger than many European countries, dedicated exclusively to hydrogen production for export to Japan and South Korea.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><b> Technical challenges: Storage and distribution<\/b><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.energy.gov\/eere\/fuelcells\/hydrogen-storage\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hydrogen is the smallest molecule in the universe, which makes it extremely difficult to store<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. It leaks easily and can embrittle existing steel pipes. The solution that researchers are exploring is the transformation of existing natural gas networks to transport hydrogen blends or the use of liquid organic hydrogen carriers (LOHC).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.h2tools.org\/bestpractices\/hydrogen-safety-overview\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Safety is another major public concern<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Although hydrogen is flammable, modern monitoring technologies and advanced sensors make its use as safe as that of methane gas or gasoline, according to industrial safety studies.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><b> Economic future: jobs and investment<\/b><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/hydrogencouncil.com\/en\/hydrogen-insights-2023\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is estimated that the hydrogen economy will create over 30 million jobs globally by 2050<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. The total investments required are in the trillions of dollars, but the benefits in reducing the costs caused by climate disasters far outweigh these sums.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Green hydrogen is no longer a simple theoretical promise. It is an industrial reality taking shape in steel mills, ports, and research centers around the world. Although the road to a fully hydrogen-based economy is paved with logistical challenges, the speed of innovation suggests that we are much closer to the &#8220;hydrogen era&#8221; than we would have thought a decade ago.
