For over 130 years, the Statue of Liberty has stood tall on Liberty Island \u2014 one of the most iconic symbols of freedom and democracy in the world.<\/span><\/p>\n

But fun fact: she wasn\u2019t made in the USA. The statue was actually a gift from France, sent over in 1884 to mark 100 years since the Declaration of Independence and to celebrate the friendship between the two nations.<\/span><\/p>\n

Now, that friendship is being tested.<\/span><\/p>\n

French politician Rapha\u00ebl Glucksmann recently made waves by saying<\/a> that if Americans \u201cdespise the values of freedom,\u201d maybe it\u2019s time they gave the statue back. Yep \u2014 he actually suggested it should return to France.<\/span><\/p>\n

That one comment set off a political firestorm across the Atlantic. Suddenly, Lady Liberty \u2014 the ultimate symbol of American ideals \u2014 is at the center of a heated international debate.<\/span><\/p>\n

The French Say: Give It Back <\/p>\n

At a rally in Paris, Glucksmann \u2014 leader of the left-wing Place Publique party \u2014 slammed U.S. politics, especially Donald Trump and how he\u2019s handled the war in Ukraine. He argued that cutting support for Kyiv goes against everything the Statue of Liberty stands for.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cWe will say to Americans who have chosen to side with tyrants: \u2018Give us back the Statue of Liberty,\u2019\u201d Glucksmann told the crowd. He added that the U.S. now \u201cdespises\u201d the statue and the values it represents.<\/span><\/p>\n

He didn\u2019t stop there \u2014 Glucksmann also took a jab at the state of American science, claiming the U.S. is firing researchers who stand up for academic freedom. \u201cIf you want to get rid of your best scientists, we\u2019ll gladly take them,\u201d he said.<\/span><\/p>\n

White House: Thanks, But No Thanks <\/p>\n

The response<\/a> from Washington was swift. White House spokesperson Karoline Leavitt dismissed Glucksmann as \u201can unknown little French politician\u201d and fired back with a sharp reminder: without American help in WWII, France might be speaking German today.<\/span><\/p>\n

She also made it clear that the Statue of Liberty isn\u2019t going anywhere. \u201cIt was a gift, not a loan,\u201d Leavitt said. \u201cMaybe the French should thank us for our support instead of making ridiculous demands.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Trump, Ukraine, and the Clash of Values <\/p>\n

Trump didn\u2019t weigh in personally, but his track record speaks for itself. As president, he cut military aid to Ukraine and often suggested the US should steer clear of European conflicts \u2014 a stance that\u2019s drawn heavy criticism from French leaders.<\/span><\/p>\n

Some, like Senator Claude Malhuret, didn\u2019t hold back. He compared Trump\u2019s administration to \u201cthe court of Nero\u201d and described it as \u201can arsonist emperor, submissive courtiers, and a clown on ketamine.\u201d That speech has since gone viral in France.<\/span><\/p>\n

How Lady Liberty Got to New York <\/p>\n

The idea for the statue actually came from France in the 1860s. Sculptor Fr\u00e9d\u00e9ric Auguste Bartholdi designed it as a symbol of democracy and friendship between nations. Most of the money for the statue came from French citizens \u2014 the U.S. only paid for the pedestal.<\/span><\/p>\n

The statue was finished in Paris in 1884, shipped to New York in pieces, and officially unveiled in 1886. Since then, she\u2019s become a beacon of hope \u2014 especially for immigrants arriving in the U.S. in search of a better life.<\/span><\/p>\n

Symbol or Scapegoat?<\/b><\/h3>\n

The whole debate shows how powerful \u2014 and sometimes controversial \u2014 symbols can be. For some, the Statue of Liberty<\/a> still stands for freedom and justice. For others, especially critics of recent U.S. policies, she\u2019s a reminder of ideals that are no longer being upheld.<\/span><\/p>\n

Glucksmann\u2019s message is clear: if America no longer believes in what the statue represents, maybe it doesn\u2019t deserve to keep her. Trump supporters, meanwhile, argue that Europe needs to stop relying on the U.S. and focus on its own defence.<\/span><\/p>\n
