Now, US officials announced plans<\/a> to release nearly 50,000 additional Epstein-related files.<\/span><\/p>\n

Within hours of the <\/span>document releases<\/span><\/a> in January, social media was flooded with videos claiming that the files would \u201cbring down\u201d prominent political figures. Federal prosecutors had identified roughly 6 million files as \u201cpotentially responsive,\u201d meaning <\/span>millions more documents remain unreleased<\/span><\/a> that may contain relevant information. <\/span><\/p>\n

The clip spread rapidly on X and TikTok, framed as proof that authorities had staged her imprisonment. But the video\u2019s original creator later acknowledged it was a faceswap created with AI using Remaker AI and labelled as satire on Instagram. Reuters\u2019 fact check team confirmed the <\/span>clip was altered<\/span><\/a> as well. <\/span><\/p>\n

Maxwell, who was convicted in 2021 of helping Epstein sexually abuse teenage girls, is <\/span>serving a 20-year prison sentence <\/span><\/a>in the United States. Yet the correction moved far slower than the claim. <\/span><\/p>\n

According to a <\/span>caption circulated online,<\/span><\/a> she was transferred to a psychiatric center and has not been publicly seen since. There has been no verified public update on her case since 2013. There is no evidence that her accusations were grounded in reality. Yet on various platforms, the video is being reframed as <\/span>prophetic <\/span><\/a>\u2013 a supposed early whistleblower exposing the same elite network now linked online to Epstein.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Creators <\/span><\/a>also claim Maxwell paid off officials to escape prison. Old photos of politicians at parties are reframed as proof of secret rituals. AI-generated clips blend seamlessly into genuine footage. While journalists verify documents and fact-check viral claims, influencers and videos have already shaped the narrative for millions. <\/span><\/p>\n

It would be easy to frame this explosion purely as a failure of media literacy. Certainly, the rapid spread of AI-manipulated videos and mislabelled court documents reveals a gap in digital competency.
