Six years in a bubble: Titu Maiorescu University and the mirage of the license<\/b><\/p>\n

I chose a private university, Titu Maiorescu, with the hope that the investment in my education would guarantee a running start. It was six long years, a marathon in which I combined my bachelor’s and master’s degrees, dreaming of the day I would have my own instruments and my own patients. But life had other plans. The COVID-19 pandemic hit exactly when I needed practice the most. We found ourselves doctors “on paper,” with minds full of theory but with hands untrained due to unfortunate circumstances beyond our control.<\/p>\n

When I finished, I was ready to conquer Bucharest. The reality? The capital looked at me with indifference. “Do you have experience?” “No, I attended university during the pandemic.” “We\u2019re sorry, we don\u2019t offer a chair to doctors without a trained hand.”<\/p>\n

The compromise: A year and a half at the feet of others<\/b><\/p>\n

I swallowed my pride and took a step back. To survive and remain in the clinical environment, I accepted a job as a dental assistant at a clinic in Bucharest. I, the one who was supposed to treat, was preparing trays, suctioning saliva, and watching how others performed the profession for which I had studied for entire nights.<\/p>\n

It was a period of constructive humility, but also of deep sadness. In Bucharest, I was just another name in a database, an “assistant” ignored by clinics that did not want to invest time in training a young person. I felt my dream fading under the light of the operating lamps I was adjusting for other doctors.<\/p>\n

Returning to roots: C\u00e2mpulung Muscel, my salvation<\/b><\/p>\n

After a year and a half of assisting, I made a decision that seemed, to many, like a failure: I left Bucharest. I headed toward C\u00e2mpulung Muscel, a town near my childhood home, close to my family, and the places where I grew up.<\/p>\n

Here, the miracle happened. The people of C\u00e2mpulung did not see me as a “product of the pandemic,” but as a young person eager to work, with a solid theoretical background just waiting to be put to use. I was understood, accepted, and, for the first time, respected.<\/p>\n

The present: The dream realized at 27<\/b><\/p>\n

I have been a dentist in the true sense of the word for three months. Since January, my life has changed radically. I have my own office, I have my own assistant who now helps me, just as I once did for others. I am rewarded at my true value, I benefit from much better working conditions and, most importantly, I have the respect of the community.<\/p>\n

The residents of C\u00e2mpulung Muscel cross my threshold with confidence, and I respond to them with all the passion I accumulated during the years of waiting. I am close to my parents, in the quietness near home, and I realize that the failure in Bucharest was, in fact, my greatest stroke of luck.<\/p>\n

A message for colleagues at Titu Maiorescu and beyond<\/b><\/p>\n

If you are a student or a fresh graduate and feel like you are hitting a wall because “you don’t have practice,” do not despair.<\/p>\n

Do not be afraid to be an assistant at first:<\/b> It teaches you the rigor and humility necessary for a good doctor.<\/p>\n

Bucharest is not the center of the universe:<\/b> There are towns that desperately need your energy and knowledge, where you will be treated as a person, not a number. Although it seems like it should be the other way around, you have more opportunities and benefits in the province than in the Capital.<\/p>\n

Value your studies:<\/b> Even if the pandemic stole our practice, it could not steal our determination.<\/p>\n

Today, when I put on my badge with “Dr. Ghinea Mihai Marcel,” I know that every floor mopped and every refusal in Bucharest were the steps toward my success here, in Muscel. Do not give up on your dream, even if the road detours through places you did not expect.<\/p>\n
