Permanent residence will only be available after two decades \u2014 a fourfold increase compared to the current five-year pathway.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1543\" data-end=\"1779\">\u201cIn practice, this means people will spend twenty years of their lives in uncertainty, living with the fear of being sent back to a country where they were once deemed at risk of persecution,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/freemovement.org.uk\/home-secretary-announces-major-asylum-and-other-changes-in-new-policy-paper-restoring-order-and-control\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">warns<\/a> Sonia Lenegan, an immigration lawyer.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1781\" data-end=\"1955\">The government also plans to revise refugee benefits and introduce a \u201ccontribution mechanism\u201d, requiring migrants with assets or income to help cover the cost of support.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1957\" data-end=\"2119\">\u201cThe government should be ashamed. Instead of standing up to anti-migrant hatred, it is laying the groundwork for the far right,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/NadiaWhittomeMP\/status\/1990455675256779119\">argues<\/a> Labour MP Nadia Whittome.<\/p>\n<h3 data-start=\"2126\" data-end=\"2166\">Legal routes remain limited and slow<\/h3>\n<p data-start=\"2168\" data-end=\"2381\">Despite the stricter approach, UK authorities insist that safe and legal routes for refugees will be expanded, including community sponsorship programmes and initiatives aimed at students and skilled migrants.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2383\" data-end=\"2676\">Migration remains one of the most influential issues for British voters, especially amid the sharp rise in arrivals by small boats since Prime Minister Keir Starmer took office. In the first half of 2025, the number of such crossings was roughly 50% higher than in the same period in 2024.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2678\" data-end=\"2884\">Still, while ministers highlight the UK\u2019s high volume of asylum claims, government data shows that in the year up to March, Germany, Spain, France, and Italy all processed more applications than the UK.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2886\" data-end=\"3184\" data-is-last-node=\"\" data-is-only-node=\"\">People seeking asylum typically flee war, persecution, or human rights abuses and apply for international protection in another country.
