Interest in politics among young Poles has clearly increased, with nearly<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/english.swps.pl\/images\/STRUKTURA\/centra-badawcze\/youth-research-center\/documents\/wchodzenie-w-obywatelska-dorososc-raport-2023.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">one-third<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> reporting a high or very high level of interest. The rapid surge in political interest and social participation was no accident; young Poles felt anger and frustration. We experienced inflation, rising prices, and higher living costs, leading to deep disillusionment with government policies. For many young voters, including me, casting a ballot in the 2023 parliamentary elections was a way to support progressive and socially liberal parties. The vote was intended to be an expression of disagreement with government policy &#8211; a way to formally rebel against a government rhetoric characterised by traditionalism and conservatism. But most of all, all of us across age groups and backgrounds were scared of what our country was turning into &#8211; a flawed democracy.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Many of my peers feared that democratic procedures would be violated. According to a United Surveys study for <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dziennik Gazeta Prawna<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and RMF FM,<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.gazetaprawna.pl\/wiadomosci\/kraj\/artykuly\/9320291,wybory-2023-sondaz-412-proc-ankietowanych-ma-obawy-ze-wyniki-wybo.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">41.2%<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of Poles shared the fear that the election results could be manipulated or falsified.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This anxiety was particularly high among opposition supporters, who felt a profound lack of trust in the state institutions overseeing the vote. But we were so determined. We wouldn&#8217;t let them do that. A record number of citizens volunteered as election observers. Ten days before the election, the<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/aktywniobywatele.org.pl\/en\/projekty\/the-committee-for-the-defence-of-democracy\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Committee for the Defence of Democracy (KOD)<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a grassroots movement founded in 2015 to protect the rule of law, had already recruited<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/oko.press\/obywatelska-kontrola-wyborow-2\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">25,000<\/span><\/a> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">volunteers to serve as election observers. It felt like sending a message to the ones upstairs, saying: \u201cWe are watching you.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><b>The Change is Coming<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Two weeks before the crucial elections, the United Opposition\u2019s leader, Donald Tusk, called citizens to a rally in Warsaw. My friends and I boarded an overpacked train from Lublin to Warsaw. We could feel the unique atmosphere filling the overcrowded wagons. People of all ages held both Polish and EU flags, smiling, talking, and laughing. The march took hours. There were so many of us that, at times, we stood at a standstill, buried in the crowd, trying to turn onto a new street. Now, slightly over two years later, my memory is a tad blurry. I remember, however, the feeling of patriotism that rushed through my mind, a rather unique feeling for a left-leaning Pole. In Poland, patriotism has been hijacked by nationalism; some use these words interchangeably.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cA breakthrough moment is coming in the history of our homeland. Let no one among the ruling team have any illusions. Change for the better is inevitable.\u201d<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2014 <\/span><b>Donald Tusk, March of a Million Hearts, October 2023<\/b><\/p>\n<h3><b>Did the change come, though?<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cDefinitely not. Above all, the new government failed to fulfil almost any of its promises; it seems like winning the election actually caught them by surprise, because almost nothing happened during the first few months. Among my peers, there\u2019s a prevailing sense of discouragement and a conviction that very little has changed.\u201d<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2014 <\/span><b>Jakub, 24<\/b><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI believe the majority of young people expected the liberalisation of abortion laws, the introduction of civil partnerships, the restoration of the judicial system, and a solution to the housing crisis. The current government has failed to implement a single solution regarding any of these issues.\u201d<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2014 <\/span><b>Aleksandra, 23<\/b><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cAbsolutely not. Young people want a modern, European state where matters such as abortion, euthanasia, and LGBTQ+ rights are treated as civilised. The ruling coalition largely supports<\/span><\/i><a href=\"https:\/\/culture.pl\/en\/article\/pathological-architecture-micro-flats-a-new-phenomenon\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2018pathological\u2019 housing development. They<\/span><\/a><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> don\u2019t give a damn about these problems.\u201d<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2014 <\/span><b>Kacper, 24<\/b><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">During the 2023 campaign, Donald Tusk released<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/notesfrompoland.com\/2023\/09\/11\/polish-opposition-outlines-100-policies-for-first-100-days-in-office\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">a list of 100 policies<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that his government would fulfil in 100 days. As of December 2025, the government has fully implemented only<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/demagog.org.pl\/analizy_i_raporty\/100-konkretow-po-dwoch-latach-ile-zrealizowano\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">17<\/span><\/a> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">of them, one of the most successful being the unlocking of funds from the<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.consilium.europa.eu\/en\/policies\/eu-recovery-plan\/#:~:text=On%2021%20July%202020%2C%20EU,Next%20Generation%20EU%20(NGEU).\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">European Union\u2019s post-COVID Recovery Plan<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. A survey conducted by the Public Opinion Research Centre indicates that currently, only<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbos.pl\/PL\/trendy\/trendy.php?trend_parametr=stosunek_do_rzadu\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">33%<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of Poles hold a favourable opinion of the government.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>A Right-Wing Turn<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The official turnout for the 2025 presidential election stood at<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/notesfrompoland.com\/2025\/06\/02\/right-wing-opposition-candidate-nawrocki-wins-polish-presidential-election\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">71.63%<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, beating the all-time record for a presidential race. Yet again, all eyes were on Poland. Who would the nation pick? The progressive, pro-European Rafa\u0142 Trzaskowski, or the hardline nationalist, Karol Nawrocki?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Months into the campaign, more and more skeletons came out of Karol Nawrocki\u2019s closet. The conservative candidate was accused of<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/wiadomosci.onet.pl\/wybory\/wybory-prezydenckie\/karol-nawrocki-i-tajemnice-grand-hotelu-zrodla-onetu-uczestniczyl-w-procederze\/kqwwbef?utm_term=autor_7&amp;utm_source=twitter&amp;utm_medium=social&amp;utm_campaign=onet-page-post\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">procuring prostitutes for guests at Sopot\u2019s Grand Hotel<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> while working as a security guard, allegations confirmed by journalists from the portal <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Onet.pl<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Another investigation revealed that in 2009,<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/wiadomosci.onet.pl\/kraj\/karol-nawrocki-ustawki-i-skrajnie-skrajna-prawica-to-obciaza-go-jeszcze-bardziej\/t0zvxk0\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Nawrocki participated in a large-scale, illegal, pre-arranged street fight<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> between radical supporters of Lechia Gda\u0144sk and Lech Pozna\u0144 &#8211; a fact he later confirmed, describing it as &#8220;noble, masculine combat.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cMany say that Nawrocki did not win as much as Trzaskowski lost.\u201d<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><b>\u2014 Kacper, 24<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Despite the scandals, Nawrocki won the presidential race by a slim majority of<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/prezydent2025.pkw.gov.pl\/prezydent2025\/pl\/kandydat\/4279782?runda=2\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">50.89%.<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Voters<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.onet.pl\/informacje\/onetwiadomosci\/dlatego-rafal-trzaskowski-przegral-wybory-sa-wyniki-najnowszego-sondazu\/ec1g4eb,79cfc278\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">surveyed<\/span><\/a> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">accused Trzaskowski of focusing too heavily on rival-bashing at the expense of his own platform. His perceived ambiguity on controversial topics ultimately left many feeling he stood for nothing.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><b>A Shattered Front<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The ruling coalition is bleeding out. Public disapproval is mounting, and<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.eu\/europe-poll-of-polls\/poland\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the latest polling by Politico<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> suggests a grim reality: two of the government\u2019s junior partners (Polska 2050 and PSL) are now sinking, struggling to secure even the<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.wnp.pl\/polityka-i-sondaze\/sondaze\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">5%<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> electoral threshold. At the same time, the far-right Konfederacja and Konfederacja Korony Polskiej (KKP) are growing in support. Both parties are radical, largely eurosceptic, and deeply conservative on social issues. According to the Important Matters Foundation&#8217;s State of Youth 2025 study, Konfederacja would emerge as the leading party among young voters, securing<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/waznesprawy.org\/mlodzi-wyborcy-jak-glosuja-i-co-mysla-o-polityce\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">26%<\/span><\/a> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">of respondents&#8217; support.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWe don&#8217;t want Jews, homosexuals, abortion, taxes, and the European Union.\u201d<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><b>\u2014 S\u0142awomir Mentzen, co-leader of Konfederacja,\u00a0 2019<\/b><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Those were the exact words used in 2019 during a discussion of campaign strategy. Today, Mentzen attempts to frame that speech as a \u201cyouthful mistake,\u201d shifting his public focus toward liberal economic reforms. Yet, beneath the viral TikTok-friendly videos, the party\u2019s core remains unchanged. In 2025, when videos of a Gda\u0144sk mosque surfaced online showing local Muslims, including Polish Tatars, gathering for holiday prayers, Mentzen gave a disturbing statement:<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWe must immediately close the border to immigrants from Muslim countries! &#8230; We must begin deportations instead of trying to integrate them!\u201d<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><b>\u2014 S\u0142awomir Mentzen, co-leader of Konfederacja,\u00a0 2019<\/b><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Why would young Poles turn towards traditionalist Konfederacja, while only a few years back opting for a largely liberal reform? That is the result of failing to keep the majority of the promises of the 2023 campaign. Young Poles continue to struggle with high prices amid the cost-of-living crisi<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/left.eu\/app\/uploads\/2022\/12\/explainer_CostOfLiving.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">s spreading across Europe<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. A survey by Habitat for Humanity Poland suggests that<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/habitat.pl\/files\/HfH%20-%20badanie%20opinii%20publicznej%20-%20problemy%20mieszkaniowe%20-%202023%20-%20en.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> 60% of Polish citizens spend more than 30% of their salary<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> on rent and other housing-related costs. Traditionalism and conservatism prevailed, with Tusk fearing he might lose the support of more right-leaning voters, who abstained from openly implementing liberal reforms.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Is this really what the future of Poland is going to look like? Perhaps, if the ruling coalition continues to turn a blind eye to the alarming polls. Young people feel there is no other option left other than what\u2019s left, and that\u2019s the radical parties.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Nearly<\/span><\/i><a href=\"https:\/\/waznesprawy.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/stan-mlodych-2025-raport.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">81%<\/span><\/a><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of young citizens are convinced that<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The government prioritises older citizens in their policies.<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is not necessarily a right-wing turn, but rather a call for the government to start paying attention to our interests. One thing is certain: we cannot allow the far-right to become the new normal.\u00a0 It\u2019s time to wake up, Prime Minister. <strong>Before it\u2019s too late.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u200b<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Great Awakening 2023 was a turning point.
